Kolob Canyons

Not far from our campground in Hurricane Utah was the Kolob Canyons so we took advantage of the beautiful sunny day to explore the area. We were amazed at the beauty of the area, so peaceful there and lots and lots of blooming wildflowers and even cactus blooming!!Posted by Picasa

Tilted Layers

The Colorado Plateau is famous for Horizontal rock layers. Why are they here? They are a clue to understanding the geologic forces that create Kolob Canyons. From the tilt of the Sandstone layers you can get an inkling of the folding that occurred before the uplift of the Colorado Plateau. When deeply buried, this part of today's plateau was compressed and bent into large fold. Movement along the Hurricane fault raised the Colorado Plateau. The large fold was uplifted and exposed to erosion. The West half of the fold wore away. Part of the East half is exposed as the tilted layers before you.

Find the Hanging Valley

The tracks give it away. Dark mineral stains in the opposite wall indicate an occasional waterfall that pours over the cliff after heavy storms. Waterfall tracks can also indicate that a hanging valley lies above them.
You can see this pattern throughout Kolob Canyon and Zion Canyon. Look for telltale tracks of a high waterfall that mark the lip of a hanging Valley
